Your questions answered

GP Shield is a simple service which gives you access to a doctor, day and night when you and your family need it.

There’s also help if you need physiotherapy, counselling and other useful services.

Plus, it comes with accidental death benefit of £3,000 should you die as a result of an accident.

The service is available for people who live in the UK and are aged between 18 to 80 inclusive. This does not include the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.

It’s designed to be budget-friendly - for £14.99 a month. Everyone pays the same, no matter your age or health.

There’s no medical underwriting, so you don’t need to answer any health questions or undergo any medical tests to apply.

Yes! Anyone in your immediate family who lives with you can use the GP service. The Counselling services, including for mental health, are only available to those aged 16+. All other services are available to all.

Once we’ve processed your application, you have a short 7 day wait until you can access the GP services. After this time, it’s up to you if you book a GP appointment via the telephone or video call. We will provide the GP service contact details in your welcome pack so you have everything to hand.

Your contract begins as soon as your application is processed. There’s a short 7-day wait before you can use the GP services.

Where necessary the GPs can issue a private prescription for collection from a pharmacy or to be delivered to any UK address, whether at home, work or on holiday. There is no fee for issuing prescriptions but you will pay for your medication, and for postage, even if under the NHS you are ordinarily exempt.

If the doctor thinks that your symptoms require further investigation or treatment, they can issue an open private referral letter to enable access to continued treatment. You would then need to pay for any treatment.

If it is appropriate, GPs can also issue private fit notes.

We will pay a lump sum of £3,000 should you die as a result of an accident in keeping with the contract terms.

GP Shield is especially helpful for situations when you need to speak to a GP using a time and method that’s most convenient for you, rather than it being a replacement for the NHS. You can use both the NHS and GP Shield to suit your needs.

Our most recent customer feedback shows our GP service, at the heart of GP Shield, has a very high satisfaction score of 94%.

No. It gives access to a GP, and that GP can usually resolve the majority of cases with advice or a prescription. They may in some instances write open private referrals, but only if you want private specialist care. Any private treatment will be at your cost. If you would rather follow up your call with a visit to your own GP, you can do this and they will arrange treatment through the NHS. The main purpose of this service is to provide prompt access to a GP.

No, but they can discuss symptoms and advise on next steps, including how to access testing.

No, they rely on the information you share during the call and then send notes to your NHS GP.

Private prescriptions issued by one of the GPs will be more expensive than NHS prescriptions. You will decide whether that suits the urgency of your query or whether you are prepared to wait for your own GP to issue a prescription.
